The School of Health Sciences (SHS) is the youngest in South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU). The school was established with cognizance of the dire need of human resource base equipped with relevant skills and knowledge to provide solutions to the rapidly growing challenges in Kenya’s health care delivery system. The vision of the school is to be a centre of excellence in training specialized health manpower necessary to drive the Science, Technology and Innovation sector of Kenya’s Vision 2030.The School was opened on 24thAugust 2015 and today we have three teaching departments of Public Health, Medical Microbiology and Nursing. We have already admitted 32 students to study for a Bachelor of Science degree in Public Health. We are in the final stages of administrative and legal details that will enable us to admit the first students into the department of Nursing for the Bachelor of Science degree course in September 2016.In addition, four masters’ degree courses have been fully developed and we are currently receiving applications.
We plan to start more teaching programmes drawn from other health related disciplines from next year. At the same time SEKU has designed a fund raising proposal for the development of a community based University Teaching and Referral Hospital over the next five years to compliment the role of the School of Health Sciences. This has been presented to the Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Health and is being moved to the next level. Clearly therefore the SEKU School of Health Sciences is the school to belong to for the future of health sciences training in Kenya.
We strive to be on the cutting edge of the successful integration of teaching and research in health-related disciplines. The students will be mentored through teaching and research to prepare them for a broad range of career paths in health. The school appreciates the immense support it continues to enjoy from the other schools and partners, which will undoubtedly be of mutual benefits toward strengthening of health systems in Kenya, East Africa and beyond.
