The School of Health Sciences (SHS) is among the youngest in South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU) having been established in August 2015, with the main aim of addressing the growing need for a well-qualified human resource base, to provide solutions to the increasing challenges in Kenya’s health care delivery system. The vision of the School is to be a centre of excellence in training specialised health manpower necessary to drive the science, technology and innovation sector of Kenya’s Vision 2030.

SHS has grown rapidly over the short period of its existence and today has three teaching departments: Public Health, Medical Microbiology, and Nursing. We are now finalizing the administrative and legal processes for the admission of the first cohort of students for the BSc in Nursing in January 2018. In addition, four masters’ degree courses have been fully developed and admissions are underway.

The School boast a qualified, competent and customer oriented faculty. We are on the cutting edge of integrating teaching and research into health-related disciplines. Our students are carefully mentored through teaching and research to prepare them for a broad range of career paths in healthcare system.

We plan to launch more teaching programmes drawn from other health related disciplines in the next few years. At the same time, the University has developed a fund raising proposal for the establishment of a community-based university teaching and referral hospital over the next five years to bolster the teaching and operational capacity of SHS. The proposal has been presented to the National Government’s Ministry of Health for ratification.

The School of Education is one of the schools in South Eastern Kenya University(SEKU). It admitted its first batch of Self-sponsored Bachelor of Education (Arts) students in May, 2011 both in Main and Kitui Campuses. The first intake of B.Ed (Arts) School-Based students commenced their studies on 8th August, 2011 in Kitui, Machakos and Emali Campuses. The B.Ed (Science) School-Based programme will be launched in the Main Campus soon.

Early Childhood Education, Teachers Certificate (S1), or P1 Certificate and three years teaching experience with KCSE mean grade of C (Plain).

Duration: Eight semesters.

The School of External Studies and Continuing Education (SESCE) was established in June 2011 as one of the independent schools of the South Eastern University College (SEKU). SESCE is based at the main campus of SEKU, at Kwa Vonza in Kitui County and will have a branch in Nairobi from January 2012 from where most of its short courses will be run and managed. SESCE initially focuses on running and managing independent short courses for itself and SEKU’s other schools.

The main activities of SESCE are research – both theoretical and empirical. Applied research will focus on informing public and influencing policy, law, institutional and systems reform. SESCE plans to establish a big research centre and facility to enable scholars and practitioners to utilise as visiting scholars and fellows – to conduct their individual research, which may be published by SESCE or by SEKU.

SESCE will teach and train fresh students and professionals on-job and on continuing education. These will include degree, diploma and short certificate courses. SESCE plans to seek approval to establish itself as a learning school/professional institution; able to require professionals in democracy (elections), governance and leadership integrity; to get annual credit points for continuing education in addition to annual certification, like other professional bodies. Applied and other research will also be disseminated through workshops and training programmes, which inform, educate and empower key stakeholders and citizens.

Capacity building and empowerment of political, community and civic leaders; strategic planning processes, political branding and profiling, etc.

SESCE is also planning outreach activities such as civic and voter education, seminars, conferences, consultative initiatives for itself and at the initiative of other government, private sector, community, civil society, political parties, parastatals and other non-state actors.

SESCE’s other activities include advocacy and lobbying work and where necessary public interests and amicus curiae litigation. Advocacy work will involve engaging government at all levels on public discourse and citizens participation in decisions and policy making; advocacy campaigns on issues of governance (national and county governments, assemblies and other relevant governance institutions) democracy, human rights, social justice, policy making, legal and institutional reforms, accountability, budgeting, resources allocation and utilisation. Other areas of advocacy and lobbying will include publication of journals/bulletins for opinion leadership, coordination of work, information/experience sharing and for solidarity purposes.

With the promulgation of Kenya’s new constitution (on 27 August 2010), a number of human rights issues and matters of interpretation will arise; SESCE will play the twin roles of amicus curiae and public interests litigation. In cases that relate generally to its areas of engagement, SESCE will appear as amicus curiae; while in other cases SESCE may be asked by the community, institutions, citizens and stakeholders, to lodge public interests cases – for example, on violation of rights, inadequate compensation for land acquired for mining purposes or sharing of national resources/opportunities, failure by county governments to deliver services to its consumers, resolution of disputes arising from exploitation, sharing and utilisation of mineral, water and natural resources within the county, copyright, patents and intellectual property, etc. SESCE will also seek judicial review and interpretation of the constitution or legislation.

SESCE plans to play a key role in the establishment of the SEKU School of Law that will focus itself on community empowerment and development, also specialising in emerging leadership, governance, integrity, justice, exploitation, sharing and utilisation of natural resources and management of county affairs, etc.

This will be in addition to the traditional legal instruction; but more dynamic and people centred; oriented to realise such goals as the Vision 2030 and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs); – it will be oriented to inform (educate), engage (people-centred) and deliver (results-based/focused).

The curriculum for SESCE will be broadly based on;

a). The Constitution of Kenya, 2010 (and related laws) as far as governance: sharing, management, utilisation, and accounting of public offices and resources; human rights; justice; gender issues;

b). Elections and Democracy – based upon the BRIDGE Curriculum and methodology – aimed at continuing education of professionals in elections, democracy and governance. BRIDGE means Building Resources in Democracy, Governance and Elections,

c). University law and applied research curriculum.

Ms.Koki Muli is the Director of School of External Studies and Continuing Education(SESCE). She is a constitutional and elections expert. She studied in University of Nairobi, Kenya School of Law, University of London. She has also attended Oxford University, UK and Columbia University, SIPA in New York. She is an advocate and certified public secretary of Kenya.

The School of Humanities and Social Sciences formally the school of Liberal Arts and Sciences admitted its first lot of five (5) students in B.A. Social Work program in May 2010. The number of students in the school is expected to grow to over two hundred (200) by August 2015. At the end of March 2015 the school had eleven members of teaching staff.
The vision of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences reads: "To be a leading unit within the University that promotes academic achievement and excellence in teaching, training, research and consultancy in the Humanities and Social Sciences".  Pursuant to this vision, the school constantly monitors developments in its environment and in the world at large.  This provides it with societal trends and changes both at home and abroad.  The awareness gained enables the school to respond to trends and changes by introducing new academic programmes or modifying existing ones to meet the current demand. The School is currently working on three MA programs: MA Gender and Development Studies; MA Kiswahili; and MA Sociology. The School is also working on a consultancy unit that will give the School an entry point and engagement platform with nongovernmental organisations, government agencies, other organisations and any other interested parties who would want to engage the school in research, consultancy and training services.

Currently the school has three established departments:
•    Department of Gender and Development Studies.
•    Department of Linguistics and Communication
•    Department of Sociology and Anthropology

Academic Programs
The academic programs of the school are designed, as far as possible, to integrate discipline-specific and general education courses. The discipline specific courses are designed to provide students with the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for proficiency in their chosen fields of study or programs. The general education courses, on the other hand, set the foundation of higher education curriculum and provide a coherent intellectual and social experience for all students regardless of their programs of study. We have also established mentorship programs to benefit both students and staff.

The school has intensified collaboration with other schools and partners both nationally and internationally so as to equip students and faculty with relevant knowledge and skills to enable them to better work toward achieving the university college vision of excellence in teaching, research, innovation, entrepreneurship, and service. The school puts emphases on equipping faculty and students in fields such as IT, statistics, entrepreneurship, program management, and social and community service through multidisciplinary and collaborative teaching, research, and training.

With the ISO 9001:2008 Certification the school has adopted appropriate standards for achieving and maintaining high quality in its teaching, learning and research programs. These standards are enforced through appropriate documentation and review processes.
As a SEKU student in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences students are taught by, and have access to, inspirational academics who are actively involved in a diverse range of research. We offer courses that are intellectually stimulating. We believe that research feeds directly into our teaching, therefore students share in the knowledge of our academics, and become confident, independent learners and unlock their full potential. The field work component for both BA Social Work and BA Gender and Development Students, gives the students the opportunity to take part in the research process thus experiencing how knowledge is created.

On their filed practicum students are assigned individual lecturers who encourage them as they develop both academically and personally, enabling them to make the most of their time in SEKU.
